EXPLORING AND PROMOTING ICT FOR THE YOUNG MINDS

EXPLORING AND PROMOTING ICT FOR THE YOUNG MINDS

Information Communication Technology (ICT), is a wave that has spanned all sectors of life including education. This wave becomes radical such that any entity found wanting in the ICT integration is regarded as lagging.

What also appears undeniable is the information-driven nature of today's world which is facilitated by communication technology. With the recent outbreak of Covid- 19 and ensuing lockdowns, virtual administration and communication have become more popular and most sectors had to embrace ICT while existing adapters had to further broaden the scope of ICT integration, and this included schools.

Young people need to be encouraged to embrace and explore the use of ICT. The world of learning, teaching, and business today and tomorrow is fast becoming an ICT bloc where everything and everyone revolves around ICT.

When the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in 2014, introduced the (CBT) Computer Based Test mode of examination, it was like a 'big joke', but that 'big joke' has come to stay, it has now become a part of us.

In the first year of the testing, more students did not do well in the examination. The second-year recorded yet another high 'fail rate'. Then insinuations came up about JAMB dropping the idea of CBT, “it is not working” “not everyone is computer literate” they say, but the question is why will everyone or people of school age, not be computer literate?

Why are schools not teaching and implementing the use of ICT in teaching and learning?

Today those questions are fast providing answers by themselves. Schools are now considering and using automated systems, from security posts to teaching and learning aids to as far as possible. Most schools have now adopted the “smart board” method where learning is done through projector screens.

With ICT,  teaching and learning are simplified. School children can now see and almost feel an animated lion from a projector screen. Information moves faster with technology.

Any forward-looking system of education needs to fully embrace ICT, not only for effective communication but also for multi-sensory learning especially for students with special needs who require academic accommodation due to learning disorders.

Researchers are digging deeper into the ineffectiveness of ICT in this regard and beyond. This is commendable.

The mobile phones we use, we barely explore its full potentials, due to lack of proper understanding of the technical settings of each phone, before discarding and moving on to another, higher or lower than the former. Full potentials of ICT should be explored by schools, and in schools and workplaces for better promotion of businesses.

“Results from research indicate that ICT integration has great effectiveness for both teachers and students, findings indicate that teachers' well-equipped preparation with ICT tools and facilities is one of the main factors in the success of technology-based teaching and learning".

Everyone, join the team, encourage others, encourage self. Be part of the technology-driven system from home to school, to the office, and around the world. Technology is for business, and school.
